Why CMR?

October 7th, 2010

The purpose of this site has always been to identify good free resources to support the learning of specific topics in mathematics with more finely grained topic classification than other such services.

A legitimate question to ask is why such a site still exists at all in the age of Google, social bookmarking, etc, and apparently in “competition” with much better funded efforts such as Merlot and the Math Forum’s MathTools site and so on. The reason, if there is one, is I think to provide a test bed for further improvements in the areas of consistent classification by topic and evaluation of resources.

What can be done to make it easier for users to find resources that are relevant to whatever they are learning at the moment, and to ensure that they get a good idea of the real educational value of the time they may invest when they choose one?
