Have you had this conversation recently? \u00a0\u201cI keep hearing about how everything is becoming more global \u2013 even nonprofits. \u00a0We\u2019ve had some limited success gaining more donors from other countries, but don\u2019t know how to build momentum. \u00a0 We want to reach more people outside our borders, but it\u2019s just so hard and confusing to learn about who they are. \u00a0When we are lucky enough to find information, we\u2019re never sure if it\u2019s accurate, timely, or even about our potential donor.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

This session will focus on best principles on finding and evaluating international information and resources.<\/p>\n

Learning Outcomes:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022How to work out where to look for international information when no one you know has any good suggestions.<\/p>\n

\u2022What pitfalls to avoid when searching in a language not your own. This includes different language conventions and naming patterns, issues with transliteration, etc.<\/p>\n

\u2022How to interpret different information presentation styles \u2013 it\u2019s not always what you assume!<\/p>\n

\u2022What criteria to use when evaluating the information you find.<\/p>\n

\u2022Guiding principles and techniques on how to find asset information no matter what country.<\/p>\n

You\u00a0can\u00a0find additional support for your organization by increasing your potential supporter base from just your country to the globe. \u00a0This is especially true if:<\/p>\n

\u2022You are a nonprofit with internationally based alumni or beneficiaries<\/p>\n

\u2022Your programs include activities abroad<\/p>\n

\u2022The decision makers for a promising funding source are in another country<\/p>\n

Sabine Schuller, MLIS, Research Specialist at The Rotary Foundation\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Rotary is a worldwide organization of more than 1.2 million business, professional, and community leaders. Members of Rotary clubs, known as Rotarians, provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. As a donor researcher,for Rotary, Sabine identifies and analyzes donors around the globe. She was previously a program officer for Rotary, coaching grant applicants in Latin America, Europe, and North America. Sabine\u2019s first experience in the nonprofit world was at Northwestern University. She developed industry analyses for new commercial opportunities at an international business development center.Sabine is a proud member of the Illinois donor research chapter APRA-IL and also supports her local business librarian association, SLA-IL.<\/p>\n

Erica Sum<\/strong> MISt Research Officer at the University of Toronto, Division of University Advancement\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

With alumni in 174 countries, Erica\u2019s work has involved conducting international research for prospects around the world. Erica\u2019s previous research experience spans non-profit organizations, academic research and business libraries. She is a member of APRA Canada and a former Director of CASLIS Toronto. She enjoys fundraising and volunteering in her spare time.<\/p>\n
