{"id":59,"date":"2021-10-27T00:31:12","date_gmt":"2021-10-27T07:31:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qpr.ca\/blogs\/constream\/?p=59"},"modified":"2021-10-27T00:31:12","modified_gmt":"2021-10-27T07:31:12","slug":"borderline-consciousness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qpr.ca\/blogs\/constream\/2021\/10\/27\/borderline-consciousness\/","title":{"rendered":"Borderline Consciousness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Philosopher <a href=\"http:\/\/www.faculty.ucr.edu\/~eschwitz\/\">Eric Schwitzgebel<\/a> has written a paper: <em><a href=\"http:\/\/faculty.ucr.edu\/~eschwitz\/SchwitzAbs\/BorderlineConsciousness.htm\">Borderline Consciousness, When It&#8217;s Neither Determinately True nor Determinately False That Experience Is Present<\/a><\/em> that I think is interesting but perhaps somewhat over-plays the idea of &#8220;vagueness&#8221; as if something different from merely being a quantity that does in fact have a continuum of values. We don&#8217;t talk of position or temperature as &#8220;vague&#8221; even though we often use vague language like &#8220;hot&#8221; and &#8220;cold&#8221; to describe them. Similarly, I think it plausible that while the description of an entity as &#8220;conscious&#8221; may be vague there may nonetheless be a fairly well defined measure of <em>consciousness<\/em> which has values on a continuum.
