{"id":7,"date":"2021-10-19T07:05:31","date_gmt":"2021-10-19T07:05:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qpr.ca\/blogs\/mathstuff\/?page_id=7"},"modified":"2021-11-01T05:22:19","modified_gmt":"2021-11-01T05:22:19","slug":"1-fundamentals","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/qpr.ca\/blogs\/mathstuff\/precalculus\/1-fundamentals\/","title":{"rendered":"1 &#8211; Fundamentals"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/qpr.ca\/math\/modules\/1%20review\">Review<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Introduction<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This module is intended to provide a quick review of the basic properties of the Real Number System and the use of Cartesian Coordinates.\u00a0(See\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/objectives\/\">Module Learning Objectives<\/a>\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/qpr.ca\/math\/modules\/1%20review\/objectives.htm\">Module Learning Objectives-old<\/a>&#8211; for more details.)<br>It includes a set of\u00a0 \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/notes\/\">Study Notes<\/a> \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/qpr.ca\/math\/modules\/1%20review\/notes\/index.htm\">Study Notes-old<\/a>, an on-line\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/lab\/\">Lab<\/a>\u00a0  <a href=\"https:\/\/qpr.ca\/math\/modules\/1%20review\/lab\/index.htm\">Lab<\/a>-old  to help reinforce the concepts, and a collection of links to other web-based\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/resources\/\">Resources<\/a>\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/qpr.ca\/math\/modules\/1%20review\/resource\/index.htm\">Resources<\/a>-old on the topics being reviewed.<br>It is provided as an aid to independent non-credit study by students who feel a need to improve their understanding of these topics prior to either taking the Math Diagnostic Test, or entering a Calculus course.<br>There is no assessment or credit available in this context. In order to obtain credit it is necessary to enrol in a course such as Langara&#8217;s Math 1170. For distance learners, the Open Learning Agency&#8217;s Math 100 covers similar material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a one semester precalculus course the material in this module is usually reviewed quickly in the first week of classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to succeed in thiscourse, it will be important to have a good grasp of the fundamentals. That does not mean that you need to have been a \u201cmath whiz\u201d all of your life, or that you are now expected to recall everything that whizzed by you in the past, but you&nbsp;<em>will<\/em>&nbsp;need to fill in any gaps before going on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this module we will identify all that you need in order to continue, and if you master it well you should be well prepared for the rest of the course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For some students this module may seem elementary, but don\u2019t ignore it. Those who have done well in math may still have some misconceptions to be dealt with, and\/or some of the language may be used in a slightly different way from what you are used to.
