{"id":1906,"date":"2013-01-21T17:19:26","date_gmt":"2013-01-22T00:19:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qpr.ca\/blogs\/?p=1906"},"modified":"2013-01-21T17:19:26","modified_gmt":"2013-01-22T00:19:26","slug":"i-cant-help-doing-this","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qpr.ca\/blogs\/2013\/01\/21\/i-cant-help-doing-this\/","title":{"rendered":"I can&#8217;t help doing this"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230;because I have freely decided to do it!<\/p>\n<p>Those who claim to have evidence that <a href='http:\/\/io9.com\/5975778\/scientific-evidence-that-you-probably-dont-have-free-will'>&#8220;you probably don\u2019t have free will&#8221;<\/a> or who assert that complex chaotic systems&#8217; unpredictability <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jimal-khalili.com\/blog\/do-we-have-free-will-a-physicists-perspective.html\">&#8220;is what gives you free will&#8221;<\/a> are both either unprincipled or naive in accepting that the idea of &#8220;free will&#8221; has any absolute meaning.<\/p>\n<p>\nI have yet to see a coherent definition of what it would mean to have, as opposed to not have, free will. But I cannot follow along with <a href=\"http:\/\/whyevolutionistrue.wordpress.com\/2013\/01\/18\/a-physicist-gets-muddled-about-free-will\/\">the game<\/a> of debunking the concept by refuting a definition that was proposed in order to debunk the concept.<br \/>\nOn the other hand, if Dennett is right in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edge.org\/conversation\/normal-well-tempered-mind\">his claim<\/a> that &#8220;Philosophers have done some real work that the scientists jolly well should know&#8221; then I&#8217;d like to see a brief sample of what he considers the best (just in case there&#8217;s a chance that looking further wouldn&#8217;t be wasting my time).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230;because I have freely decided to do it!
