{"id":2076,"date":"2013-09-15T11:10:22","date_gmt":"2013-09-15T18:10:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qpr.ca\/blogs\/?p=2076"},"modified":"2013-09-15T11:10:22","modified_gmt":"2013-09-15T18:10:22","slug":"science-and-religion-a-false-parallel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qpr.ca\/blogs\/2013\/09\/15\/science-and-religion-a-false-parallel\/","title":{"rendered":"Science and Religion &#8211; a false parallel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/freethoughtblogs.com\/butterfliesandwheels\/2013\/09\/a-radical-break-from-religious-conceptions-of-meaning-and-value\/\">Ophelia Benson<\/a>. quoting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newrepublic.com\/article\/114127\/science-not-enemy-humanities\">Stephen Pinker<\/a> in paraphrase of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Rocks-Ages-Science-Religion-Fullness\/dp\/034545040X\">Stephen Jay Gould<\/a> to the effect that &#8220;Science gets the empirical universe; religion gets the questions of moral meaning and value&#8221; struck me as identifying the key point on which Gould&#8217;s idea of \u201cnon-overlapping magisteria\u201d is often misinterpreted. <\/p>\n<p>It is true that science &#8220;gets&#8221; the empirical universe because science is <em>defined<\/em> as including anything useful that can be said about the empirical universe (whether or not it comes from &#8220;peer reviewed&#8221; journals or people with academic appointments in specific disciplines at specially annointed institutions). But religion does not &#8220;get&#8221; the questions of moral meaning and value &#8211; it may be <em>restricted<\/em> to those questions but it doesn&#8217;t <em>own<\/em> them. The fields of ethics and aesthetics &#8220;get&#8221; these questions by definition in the same sense as science &#8220;gets&#8221; the empirical world, but anyone who wants to is empowered to participate. To compare science and religion is like comparing values and academic departments or journals.
