{"id":4511,"date":"2023-03-21T23:13:50","date_gmt":"2023-03-22T06:13:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qpr.ca\/blogs\/?p=4511"},"modified":"2023-03-21T23:38:21","modified_gmt":"2023-03-22T06:38:21","slug":"bizarre-projection-of-a-political-agenda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qpr.ca\/blogs\/2023\/03\/21\/bizarre-projection-of-a-political-agenda\/","title":{"rendered":"Bizarre Projection of a Political Agenda"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The role reversal in the &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roman_Charity\">Roman Charity<\/a>&#8216; story reminds me to some extent of that in\u00a0Robert Munch&#8217;s delightful little tear jerker <a href=\"https:\/\/robertmunsch.com\/book\/love-you-forever\">Love You Forever<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The daughter&#8217;s adoption of a maternal role is especially apparent in representations like these two:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roman_Charity#\/media\/File:Roman_Charity_-_Pieter_Pauwel_Reubens.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4512\" src=\"https:\/\/qpr.ca\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Roman_Charity_-_Pieter_Pauwel_Reubens-300x233-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roman_Charity#\/media\/File:Affresco_romano_-_Pompei_-_Micon_e_Pero.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4513\" src=\"https:\/\/qpr.ca\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Affresco_romano_-_Pompei_-_Micon_e_Pero-298x300-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"298\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Others show the fear of being discovered in violation of the verdict (of death by starvation)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roman_Charity#\/media\/File:Gaspar_de_Crayer_-_Caritas_Romana.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-4514\" src=\"https:\/\/qpr.ca\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Gaspar_de_Crayer_-_Caritas_Romana-300x231-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"308\" height=\"237\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roman_Charity#\/media\/File:Artemisia_Gentileschi_'Caritas_Romana'.webp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4515\" src=\"https:\/\/qpr.ca\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Artemisia_Gentileschi_Caritas_Romana.webp_-300x238-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"238\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; but I see no particular suggestion there of lasciviousness or embarrassment at the social situation.<\/p>\n<p>What they all most definitely do NOT bring to mind is <em><a href=\"https:\/\/aeon.co\/essays\/on-roman-charity-or-a-womans-filial-debt-to-the-patriarchy?utm_source=Aeon+Newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=bfafe8d262-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2023_03_17&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_-b1f49aa884-%5BLIST_EMAIL_ID%5D\">a woman\u2019s filial debt to the patriarchy <\/a><\/em>(especially since in the earliest version of the story it was apparently the <em>mother <\/em>who was being saved from starvation by her daughter).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The role reversal in the &#8216;Roman Charity&#8216; story reminds me to some extent of that in\u00a0Robert Munch&#8217;s delightful little tear jerker Love You Forever.
