{"id":705,"date":"2010-06-11T08:58:10","date_gmt":"2010-06-11T15:58:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qpr.ca\/blog\/?p=705"},"modified":"2010-08-13T22:36:47","modified_gmt":"2010-08-14T05:36:47","slug":"does-the-internet-make-you-smarter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qpr.ca\/blogs\/2010\/06\/11\/does-the-internet-make-you-smarter\/","title":{"rendered":"Does the Internet Make You Smarter?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was led to <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052748704025304575284973472694334.html?mod=wsj_share_twitter#CritLit2010\">this<\/a> by a #CritLit2010 Tweet from <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/RuthHoward\">Ruth Howard<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In it Clay Shirky responds to Nick Carr and others who worry that &#8220;the internet is making us dumber&#8221;. But I think to some extent Shirky misidentifies the concerns of the &#8220;dumber&#8221; camp (and certainly says nothing about making us smarter) although he does\u00a0 address some important issues.<\/p>\n<p>Carr and his ilk worry about the impact of web-based media on our reading habits and attention spans, and although I think that the evidence they cite is <a href='http:\/\/092.me'>question<\/a>able I can&#8217;t really deny that their concerns about a potential issue may be legitimate.<\/p>\n<p>Shirky looks instead at the concerns about quailty of content being drowned in a flood of garbage, which are also commonly expressed but not really as &#8220;the case for digitally-driven stupidity&#8221;.[<a href=\"#footnote\">1<\/a>]\n<p>What I think is most useful in Shirky&#8217;s article is his claim that we will address the abundance issue by &#8220;invent(ing) cultural norms that do for the Internet&#8217;s abundance what the  intellectuals of the 17th century did for print&#8221;. This is already happening (via &#8220;like this&#8221; buttons, &#8220;people who bought this also bought that&#8221; recommendations, and other reputation management schemes) but Shirky is right to draw attention to it as something that still needs work.<br \/>\n<a name=\"footnote\"><br \/>\nAddendum<\/a> (June 13): <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/06\/11\/opinion\/11Pinker.html\">Stephen Pinker<\/a> does a better job of addressing the actual <a href='http:\/\/092.me'>question<\/a> of effects on intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>Update (Aug 13) the Globe and Mail published a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/books\/battle-of-the-web-gurus\/article1642993\/\">comparative review<\/a> by Anthony Williams of Carr and Shirky&#8217;s books on July 16, and also, on Aug 4, republished (from LA Times) <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/2010\/jul\/25\/opinion\/la-oe-chabris-computers-brain-20100725\">&#8216;The Digital Alarmists Are Wrong&#8217;<\/a> by Christopher Chabris and Daniel Simons <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was led to this by a #CritLit2010 Tweet from Ruth Howard.
