Module 3 – Polynomial and Rational Functions
Learning Objectives
In this module you will become familiar with polynomial and rational
functions. In particular, you will study their graphs, and their use in
solving practical problems.
After completing this module you should be able to:
- Recognize applied situations involving polynomial and rational
functions,
- Use both exact techniques and approximation methods to solve
equations involving such functions,
- Quickly sketch rough graphs of polynomial and rational functions,
including such features as intercepts and asymptotes, and showing
correct regions of positive and negative value,
- Determine the specific formulas for functions of various types
from given graphs and/or specified values,
- Apply these skills to solve problems in a wide variety of
practical situations.
Each section
of the notes for this module
addresses some of
these in more detail.
