Section 1 - Exponential Functions of a Real Variable
Positive integer exponents correspond to repeated multiplication,
negative exponents correspond to division, and fractional exponents to
taking roots, but in applications like the
radiation
example
we may want to consider expressions like 2^t (i.e. two to the power t) for
arbitrary real values of the exponent t. But what does this
mean when t is irrational?
In this section
you will answer that question and learn more about the function so
defined.
What to do
- Use this
'Reading Guide'
link to guide your reading of section 4.2 of the text. As you proceed,
use the questions in the reading guide to confirm your
understanding,keep in mind your
Learning Objectives for this section, and when you have finished be
sure to follow the suggestions regarding Further
Practice.
