Section 1.1 – The Real Number System

By the time you have completed this section you should be able to:

  • Identify various kinds of real number (eg integer, rational, irrational)
  • Explain why some numbers have to be “irrational”
  • Locate given numbers graphically on a “Number Line”, and estimate the value of a number from its position on the Number Line
  • Use absolute values to determine distance
  • Correctly evaluate arithmetic expressions by applying operations in the appropriate order, including operations on signed and fractional numbers
