There are two kinds of philanthropy:
- Traditional philanthropy – which is most prevalent and most discussed – from healthcare to education to arts and culture to the environment. Improving life by addressing specific needs.
- And then there’s social change philanthropy. The philanthropy that addresses the root causes not symptoms.
Which kind do you need to cultivate?
On June 20, Simone Joyaux will discuss how organizations with a social justice mission can identify potential support and raise the funds needed to both run your organization and carry out needed programs.

Umeeda Switlo went to Rwanda to give her fundraising skills to an impoverished community. She decided to work with those that had the biggest challenges, which was UPHLS, an umbrella organization working with people with disabilities and HIV/AIDS, and NOUSPR, a national organization working with users and survivors of psychiatry.
They did not want to be dependent on funds from outside the country. They set about focusing on fundraising in Rwanda, using social enterprise and other tools to build independence and sustainability.
The results are inspiring and can be applied to what you do right here.

In May we shall be presenting two webinars on the issue of diversity in fundraising. A major source of diversity in our society is the fact that we have immigrants from all over the world – many of whom have strong ties back to the places and cultures that they came from. In many cases it takes special skills and knowledge to make effective contact with these communities. Sharon Lee and Parag Tasdon are two practitioners who have done the heavy lifting with charity outreach to Muslim, Sikh, and Tamil communities among others. Learn how you can do this from this sucessess.
Tune in to Reaching Diverse Communities on May 2.
