Social Enterprise in Rwanda: Creating Sustainability

Session Description:     

Umeeda recently took a leave of absence to work in Rwanda as a volunteer with CUSO to lend her skills as a fundraising advisor to disability groups. She focused on communications, event management, local fundraising and social enterprise.

Umeeda worked with a mental health organization in Rwanda working with a women’s cooperative to create a new symbol for mental health to use in its branding and fundraising efforts. Umeeda will present a case study of sustainable fundraising through social enterprise. She will share the ideas that she and a women’s cooperative developed on to raise funds for individuals with mental disabilities in Rwanda. A success story in social enterprise.

  • Fundraisers have skills that they can use to support International development
  • Social enterprise is key tool in sustainability
  • Communities can support their own initiatives in developing countries and become less reliant

Umeda Switllo – Executive Director of the The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

 Presenter Bio: Umeeda Switlo has enjoyed a varied career that includes working as a marine biologist, entrepreneur, concert promoter, and fundraiser and has served on numerous boards focused on the environment, culture, and pluralism. She is currently was recently Public Engagement Officer with CUSO International and is now with the The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

Umeeda has previously worked with the Canadian Cancer Society, The Nature Conservancy and was CEO at Barkerville
