I am not an expert on the details, but p2p is short for “peer-to-peer” which refers to a network in which all of the nodes (typically computers) are on an equal footing rather than one in which some (typically belonging to an internet service provider) control the traffic of others. In a p2p network each of the computers is connected (either by wire or wirelessly) to a few of the others and all have information about the overall structure of the network which they agree to use to pass on messages on behalf of other peers in the network. So, if we are both on the network and i want to send a message to you, I broadcast it to my neighbors (those to whom I have a direct connection) and whichever of them can see a path to bring it closer to you passes it on the the next member of that chain (and so on). The details of how each computer decides how to process a request and how they get informed that their help is no longer needed are not something I can help with as there are many possible protocols that could be used and I am not an expert in any of them.
