Do Science Media Amplify Male Voices?

The article Science Media Amplifies Male Scientists’ Voices Over Female Ones (from ‘The Scientist‘) is an embarrassment to the cause it purports to serve.

It is true and regrettable that women are underrepresented in the sciences as a whole – and at the senior levels even in broad areas (such as health sciences as a whole) where they may actually constitute a majority. But the claim that science media are selecting against them is not supported by the observation that they are cited less frequently unless their deficit in citations is greater than might be explained by that in seniority.

By appearing to assume that it is, the author of the article discredits not just herself and her journal, but also the very idea of women’s capacity for serious thinking.
