Dear NDPMP
I was disappointed to see my party’s MPs join with the Conservatives in demanding an extension of the Liberal government’s recent weakening of the Carbon price system (which is an essential component of our struggle to reduce the emission of climate affecting chemicals, and whose broad support is dependent on maintaining the public perception that it is being fairly applied to all). Using carved out exemptions from that system is NOT an acceptable method for providing financial relief where needed; and extending that to a universal benefit is NOT an appropriate way of relieving those who are subject to particularly extreme financial stress.
It may be true that some Canadians are suffering particularly strong inflation of essential costs related to home heating. If so, then the appropriate response is to provide relief directly based on the actual harm being suffered.
I therefore urge you to move as soon as possible to call on the government to reverse the ill-advised carbon price exemption on home heating oil and to implement instead a program of relief by direct grant to households whose home heating costs have increased by more than the national average.
REVERSE THE ILL-ADVISED CARBON PRICE EXEMPTION ON HOME HEATING OIL
and
IMPLEMENT INSTEAD A UNIVERSAL FAIR HOME HEATING INFLATION SHOCK PROTECTION PLAN (HHISPP)
designed to provide targeted relief where needed by direct grant based on the amount by which the year over year increase in a household’s home heating cost exceeds the national average for such increases.
